Piedmont families packing for a Saturday at Tweetsie Railroad usually run into the same math problem: two parents, a few kids, a grandparent, maybe a cousin along for the ride. Most 5-seat SUVs force a second car. The 2026 Pathfinder does not.
Every Pathfinder trim seats up to 8 people across three rows. That is enough for the whole crew heading up US-421 toward Boone, or a carpool of kids and gear bound for a Little League tournament in North Wilkesboro. Row three folds flat when you need cargo room instead of seats, so the same SUV that hauls the family on Saturday hauls camping gear on Sunday.
The EZ Flex second-row seat slides and tilts with one motion, so loading a booster seat or climbing back to row three does not turn into a 10-minute production in a parking lot.

Wilkesboro sits close enough to the High Country that a Saturday trip up US-421 and US-321 to Boone is a real option, not a once-a-year event. Grandfather Mountain and Linville Falls both land inside that same 45-minute window, which is short enough that carsick kids in row three survive the drive.
Grades on the Parkway and NC-184 climb fast once you leave the valley floor. Pathfinder's available Intelligent 4WD adds a transfer case and 7 drive modes, including Snow, so a fall trip to see the leaves change or a winter run doesn't turn into a white-knuckle exercise on switchbacks.
Rear cargo space swallows the cooler, the folding chairs, and the stroller for a Linville Falls picnic without anyone in row three riding with gear on their lap. Fold row three flat and the Pathfinder opens up to 80.5 cu ft, enough for a full camping load if the day trip turns into an overnight at one of the Parkway campgrounds.
Rock Creek ships 4WD-only with a lifted suspension and all-terrain tires, built for families who make the High Country run often enough that grip matters more than a third option in the second row.
Families who regularly travel with 6 or 7 instead of a full 8 face a different problem: a bench seat that fits three but leaves the middle rider boxed in on both sides. Platinum trim swaps that second-row bench for two captain's chairs.
Total seating drops to 7, but each second-row passenger gets their own chair, their own armrests, and their own space for the drive to Grandfather Mountain instead of splitting one bench three ways. It also opens a walk-through aisle to row three, so a kid climbing back doesn't have to crawl over a sibling's lap at a rest stop off US-421.
For a family that splits time between hauling the whole crew and hauling just the core four or five on a normal week, Platinum is the trim built for the second scenario without giving up the third row entirely.
Platinum is the only trim with second-row captain's chairs, plus the highest feature content in the Pathfinder lineup.
Every 2026 Pathfinder trim now comes standard with a 12.3-inch touchscreen, up from 8 inches the year before, running wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Nobody has to pass a cord to the back seat or plug a phone in before pulling out of the driveway on US-421.
Qi2 wireless charging is standard across the lineup and it is fan-cooled, which matters on a hot July drive to Sugar Mountain or a long GPS session finding the Grandfather Mountain entrance when a phone running navigation nonstop tends to overheat.
None of this replaces good judgment on the road, but it does mean the driver isn't fumbling with cables while trying to merge onto US-321 with a car full of kids asking how much farther.
